Why are TV Commercials always louder than the program?

I hate it when I'm glued to a TV show and then the commercials come on and BLAST me outta my seat...

Well, I decided I couldn't take it anymore and being somewhat of an audio geek with a rack of audio processing gear, I decided to wire my Multiband Compressor into my receiver.

Problem solved.

Ok, I don't have the dynamic range in the TV programs that I normally would, but who does anyway with broadcast TV's audio already squished to bits. Since I don't have the compressor set to "wall of sound" mode, I don't get any listener fatigue. It just keeps the audio mostly in line with the volume I'd prefer.

I've thought about chaining my tube compressor on after the multiband compressor. If I do, I'll report it right here on how smashed the sound gets. :)

I'm assuming since you can do this that you can also completely mute commercials all together?

Well, yeah, but that would take all the fun out of utilizing my skillz! :)

Yeah, but that would be the best thing ever to have it automatically mute all commercials.
